We jumped back into the meatwich territory with both feet this week. Sherrel chose the Bronx Bombers and I went for the Dr. Jazz. This week was a huge success as I left tremendously happy and with a new favorite sandwich!
As I mentioned, this was a really great week. Both of these sandwiches were excellent in their own way. While I felt that the Dr. Jazz edged out the Bronx Bombers, they’re both head and shoulders above most any sandwich you’ll find anywhere else! Let’s start with the Bronx Bombers…
This sandwich was delightful in texture. It was creamy and the texture was silky but the chives really added and satisfying complexity to it. Sherrel noted that it tasted strangely like stroganoff and I agree. However, I think this tastes a little better than stroganoff. The mushroom taste was strong and bold and I enjoyed that they weren’t subordinate to other tastes. Jersey’s has a way of making a sandwich minimalist. If you remove any single ingredient, the whole experience topples. This is a powerful example of that tenet.
Moving on to the main event, I introduce you to the Dr. Jazz. This is quite possibly the best sandwich I’ve ever consumed in a restaurant. I absolutely love dark and peppery tasting sandwiches. I originally chose this one because of the pepperoni in it and somehow managed to totally miss that there was a peppery parmesan sauce on it until about half way through eating it when I started having an orgasm. My first though upon biting was “Wow, it’s been forever since I’ve had real bacon. Hmm…this sandwich okay, but I wish it was more complex.” Well, that’s what I thought when I was working my way in. Once I got my first all-inclusive center bite I was absolutely in heaven. The blend of bacon, pepperoni, turkey, and peppery parmesan produced an explosion of peppery love on my palate that proceeded to perform a hanky panky and other forms of alliterated “p” words in my mouth.
If you like pepperoni and/or peppery things, *get this sandwich.* This sandwich artfully demonstrates how to achieve balance in a flavor profile that is very far from center. I may have to order this again just to verify. I’m getting hungry again just thinking about it!
Oy! See you next week.
